Arrival in Tanzania

Tanzania is served directly or indirectly by a large number of airlines. The best port of entry for Mt. Kilimanjaro or safaris in northern Tanzania is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) often referred to locally as KIA. Currently only a few international airlines serve this airport notably: KLM (affiliated with Delta; transit in Amsterdam with a stop in DAR on the way out), Ethiopian Airlines (voted Africa’s best airline with a transit in Addis Ababa), Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul), and the newly introduced Qatar (transit in Oman and stop in Nairobi). It is possible to access these airlines from most major international airports within the USA, Canada or UK; connections may be necessary.

You can in addition arrive via Nairobi (NBO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) on other airlines such as British Airways, Kenya Airways or Emirates. Either of these options (NBO or DAR) requires further travel to northern Tanzania. You can travel via road from Nairobi or you can fly. Kenya Airways and Precision Air offer a daily service to Kilimanjaro (JRO) from NBO. Precision Air has services from DAR and there are various small ‘bush’ airlines that additionally service DAR/Arusha, a smaller regional airport near Arusha town.

Zanzibar is in addition accessible directly from the USA via KLM (Delta/Kenya Airways, their code share companies), Ethiopian Airlines and Lufthansa in conjunction with Ethiopian Airlines. Flights to Zanzibar from the northern safari circuit via regional airlines are frequent from Moshi airport as well as Kilimanjaro International (JRO) and the local Arusha airport (ARK). Some of these airlines include: Precision Air, ZanAir, Coastal Aviation, Air Excel and Regional Air. The prices vary between US$ 200-300 (round trip).

Ethiopian Airlines offers an excellent service and a modern transit terminal in Addis Ababa. The airline flies Africa’s newest fleet of airplanes, frequently from UK (London and Dublin from June 2015), USA (Washington DC, Los Angeles from June 2015) and Canada (Toronto). All flights are arriving via Addis Ababa, where you can connect to Tanzania (Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar) or Kenya (Mombasa, Nairobi). Another distinct advantage of the most renowned airline in Africa is that you also can take up to 46 kg / 100 lbs. baggage free (maximum 23 kg / 50 lbs. in one bag), even in economy class! Ethiopian Airlines is a “STAR ALLIANCE MEMBER” and therefore accepts all frequent traveler cards of other members such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, United Airlines, etc. You can book through all travel agents or on the website of Ethiopian Airlines:

To name all possible travel agencies here would exceed the capacity of this book. For this reason I have focused on a few that have been highly recommended to me by customer’s positive reviews whenever I have met them on trips, at trade fairs or, in town. This list is certainly not complete!
